Five Signs of Mice in your attic “Wee jemmy” Rodent holes, in the attic space(Insulation) you  can often see signs of  infestation,  look for small entry holes rounded in shape  in the insulation. the size of hole’s vary but roughly  about 2″ diameter  (Pictures below at the end of the page) Droppings, Mice droppings are black in colour, a easy way to determine between mice and rat droppings is an old saying. “Mice, Rice, Rats, Rasins” This is in reference to the size of the droppings. If you place mice droppings in between your fingers and roll them they should not break up or crumble. Bat droppings are very similar to mice droppings and crumble under pressure due to the insects they have eaten being left over in there droppings. Noise’s, Mice are often more noticeable at night when you are lying in bed. The house is silent, and then the scurrying/scratching starts. you will mostly hear them moving under   the attic insulation on top of the plaster board above your head or digging out there nest. Five top tips on preventing rodents entering your home 1.Food, Keep food in a sealed container, this will be one of the main reason of encouragement for a rodent to enter your premises, keep it sealed and keep the food source of the floor. Pets food should be removed at night and not left out. 2.  Perimeter of building, Check your house perimeter. Start low down and check the air bricks if you have them, a mouse can gain entry this way into the sub floor and then it will follow the pipework to other areas of the house. Generally a mouse can fit threw any gaps the width of a standard  pencil and greater. Utility pipes should be checked and the gaps around them sealed using something like  steel plate or steel wool. Expansion foam does not work. . Check all walls, windows, doors, eaves and drains for possible gaps. 3. Garden, Keep your garden tidy. Remove any harbourage areas. Tires, appliances, pallets, manure piles.  Keep all wood piles away from the house. Do not store or lean anything against your property walls this gives cover from natural predators ie raptors and provides cover for rodents gaining entry to your property. Bird feeders and loose food will attract rodents. Try to use hanging bird feeders so to make it more difficult for access and less spillage onto the ground. 4.Climbing plants, Plants on the building walls or overhanging tress can allow access into roof spaces. Keep these trimmed back. 5. Rat pest control Montrose Global pest control attended a call out for a rodent a problem in Montrose yesterday 28/2/2019.  A full site survey was carried out. We found old mice boxes had been gnawed on and found a food source of old apples in the garage with what appeared to be rat teeth mark. Further investigation led our technician to some droppings found in the garage, definitely rat. (Rattus noveigicus). External environmental risk assessments and site survey’s are carried out. We located rat burrows after cutting back some plant life and removing leaves from the ground we found the entrances and exits of the tunnels.
